Christenson Completes TAL Program

Feb 06, 2025

The South Dakota Agribusiness Association’s Tomorrow’s Ag Leaders program provides a unique opportunity for professionals in the agricultural industry to expand their knowledge, develop leadership skills, and advocate for agriculture. Hope Christenson, our recent graduate of the program, shared her insights on the experience, the lessons learned, and why she encourages others to take part.

Advocacy and Networking
When asked what motivated her to join the program, she explained, “I wanted to learn more about the legislative process at both the state and federal level and how to better advocate for agriculture. I also wanted to network with others in the ag industry.”

Experiences in Pierre and Washington, D.C.
One of the most valuable aspects of the program was the firsthand experience with the legislative process. “I really enjoyed our time in Pierre at the 2024 SD Legislative Session. It was inspiring and eye-opening to see the amount of time, energy, and talent our representatives and senators put into passing bills that will benefit the ag industry or, on the flip side, ‘killing’ bills that will harm the ag industry.” She strongly encourages others to witness the legislative process in action if given the opportunity.
The program also provided a chance to experience lobbying on both state and national levels. “I also learned what it takes to lobby a bill. We got to lobby bills in Washington, DC in front of Dusty Johnson, Mike Rounds, and John Thune (and their staff). It was a very nerve-wracking, but exciting time. I loved it!”

SDABA’s Involvement in Legislation
One of the most surprising aspects of the program was the pivotal role the South Dakota Agribusiness Association (SDABA) plays in shaping agricultural policy. “One thing that was surprising, even though it shouldn’t have been, was how involved SDABA is in fighting or promoting bills that affect all facets of the ag industry. They truly research bills, use valuable network connections, and show up in the hearings to voice the concerns or thoughts of the ag community. I don’t think they are thanked enough for advocating on behalf of the ag industry.” The dedication and hard work of organizations like SDABA are essential in ensuring the success of South Dakota’s agricultural sector.

Advice for Future Participants
For those considering joining the Tomorrow’s Ag Leaders program, her advice is simple: “If you are considering it, just do it! It gets you out of your comfort zone and opens your eyes to things working behind the scenes that can be taken for granted. It is a great opportunity to network with other ag industry professionals and learn how you can become a better advocate for agriculture.” The experience is not just about personal growth but also about becoming a more effective leader and advocate for the industry.
